Are you planning to plant vegetables even during the cold winter season? Are you thinking if this is even possible?
Well, there are some vegetables you can still plant and harvest amidst the cold winter season. Here are some of them:
Brassicas Family
Yes! Even with a light freeze, these greens can still survive. But never allow them to stay under hard frosts for too long because they can still get damaged.
Grow these during the light winters so they will be ready for harvest after 4 to six weeks. This includes:
- Kale
- Broccoli
- Mustard Greens
- Radishes
- Turnips
- Cabbage
- Cauliflower
- Brussel Sprouts
To ensure these crops will stay alive, choose a method that will warm your garden bed. Because even if these plants are strong enough to withstand frigid nights, constant exposure to the froze for both day and night may still be too much for them.
Spinach
Unlike other crops, spinach loves the cold weather. Directly plant these seeds into your garden bed but do place clear plastics over the garden bed until you see the seedling growing. Then remove the plastic to help these seedlings acclimate to the cold.
NOTE: Not all spinach are created equal. Avoid planting New Zealand Spinach because these types are frost sensitive and will not withstand the sudden temperature drop.
Root Vegetables
Parsnips, carrots, and beets will still grow even during the winter season. However, remember that like other plants these plants will still need these essential things for it to survive:
- Adequate water
- Sunlight for the tops
- Unfrozen ground
Keep the soil warm by covering it with a clear plastic while ensuring it remains MOIST, and not wet.
Swiss Chard
This is another vegetable you may consider planting during the winter season because it can grow even with temperature ranging from 100ºF or 20ºF. This is one source of nutrients your family will surely enjoy, amidst the lack of greens in the surrounding during winter.
