Love gardening but still want to consider your expenses? Come and check out some of these affordable vegetable garden hacks just for you!
#Coffee Filters
Out coffee filter at the bottom of your pot before your soil. This will prevent over draining of water. This can slow down the water drain. It gives more time for the soil to absorb the water.
#Toilet Paper Seed Tape
Instead of buying expensive seed tape, use toilet paper instead. It works well and it cheap.
#Milk Jugs for Protection
Don’t just throw away those milk jugs instead use them for protecting your plants against frost and bugs.
#Kitchen Scraps Fertilizer
Trash bins are the place for scraps. But hey, if composting is not for you, you can use those scraps from your kitchen as fertilizers.
#Citrus Peels
As you have finished juicing your lemons, don’t throw them away. You can use them as a base to start your seedling. They are also a great source of nutrients as they decompose. Be sure to put your seedling to a pot or container before the peel dries totally.
#Organized by Key-chain
Plant tags are important but sometimes we just throw them away to declutter. Use a key-chain to keep them organized and handy.
#Water Bottles
Does your plant dry up quickly? Try using an old water bottle. Poke holes on its body then bury it beside your plant. Water your plant through that bottle. It can help you slowly water your plants through its hole. Extended time for your plant to absorb the water down to its roots.
#Melon Slings
Melons tend to become heavier and bigger before they are ripe thus causing them to detach from their vine and fall. Use old t-shirts to create a sling for support and lessen the strain on the vine while preventing the melon from falling.
#Baking Soda
Do you want your tomatoes to be sweeter? Easy! Just sprinkle some baking soda on your plant and wait for sweeter tomatoes to bloom.
#Wine Bottles
After you empty your bottle of wine, clean and use them in watering your plants. Fill it with water then put it in the soil upside down. This will slowly release water for your plants keeping it moist especially in hot days.
#Egg Shells
Egg lover? Well, if you are, you probably have those eggshell in your trash. Instead of throwing them away, use them to start your seedlings. Cheaper and environmentally friendly. They are also a good source of calcium as they self compost.

I’ve been using eggshells for several years, and can’t imagine not using them in my garden 🙂 I’m going to try to bury a plastic bottle with holes in next to my plant, to water in, to keep them moist longer. I live in the desert, and its a constant battle. Thank you for a great post!
